We lost Pryor, now Carlin. All of my childhood heroes are gone. Fred Rogers, Richard Pryor and now George Carlin. The only other person that I recall idolizing as a child is OJ Simpson and he might as well be dead to me.
OK, back on track......
There are always going to be comparisons of Pryor and Carlin. To me, they worked in totally different styles and both mastered their particular genre. Pryor made us laugh by bearing his soul. He was so brutally honest about how fucked up his life was. He was able to do it all in a way that made us laugh hysterically at his own private train wreck. I think that made us feel better about the fucked up parts of our lives. It gave us a connection to the artist that only Carlin was able to reproduce.
Carlin, on the other hand, saw how fucked up the world was and did not hold back. Carlin was angry at society for being so corrupt. This characteristic is what made the connection between Carlin and his audience. He held a mirror up to us, called us hypocrites and made us laugh at our own flaws.
Both were absolutely the best at their brand of humor and will be keeping me laughing for a long time to come.
I have to thank my friend Mike(in real life) and over at LJ for this one:
